Young People’s Panel:
The Fostering Foundation South West understands the fact that young people’s views are not represented as fully as we would have wanted.
The ‘Young Peoples Panel’ is a new and exciting development set up by the Fostering Foundation for 2014. The purpose of the Young Peoples Panel is one way of ensuring Young People have a voice that is heard within Fostering. Therefore this aims to provide young people with an opportunity to be involved in the foster care recruitment process and where they will have a chance to say how fostering has affected them and what might help to put things right.
Each panel day will have up to 3 Young People (aged 8 years + whilst also taking into account their age development, emotional wellbeing, ability to manage in a group and any other risk factors. The Young People involved will then become a valued core group member who will form part of the recruitment of foster carer candidates.
The actual day will see Young People taking part in an activity (game, etc.) and then be a panel member, interviewing the applicants. The young people will then have an open discussion with a supporting staff member about their thoughts of how the day went and of the applicants being assessed. The young person’s views will form part of the applicants assessment that is presented to the adult panel and the decision maker.
Fostering Foundation staff members have progressively been discussing this new and exciting development with young people and foster carers. Young people can continue to register their interests to become involved through either Donna or Caroline on 01822 618068.
2015: UPDATE OF THE YOUNG PEOPLES PANEL SO FAR…….
Recently the Fostering Foundation ran another very successful training day for the ‘Young People’s Panel’. We had good positive feedback from this training day from both the young people and the applicants. We also have a Young Peoples Training day where we would very much welcome new interests and for any young people wanting to refresh from attending the first training day last year. This will be held on the 12th August 2015.
