In case you missed it, the Department for Education in England formally announced that foster carers will have access to the Government’s 30 hours free childcare offer for three-and-four-year-olds from September, giving them the same rights as other working families in England.
This announcement reflects a successful campaign by The Fostering Network, other organisations and foster carers. Thank you to everyone involved. More information will be available from the DfE shortly, including FAQs, an information sheet for social workers and foster carers and a foster carer customer journey. We will keep you informed.
In Wales, a similar scheme is being trialled in some pilot authorities, and we are delighted that foster carers in the pilot authorities are included in the offer as long as it’s in line with their foster child’s care plan and they meet the minimum earnings criteria. Fostering allowances can be counted as proof of earnings for foster carers who wish to access the offer for their own child or their foster child.
